Presentations

Studies show that the average person would rather die than do any form of public speaking. OK, not literally die, but fear of public speaking often comes out higher than fear of death. One study concluded that 53% of people would rather die than give any form of public speech.

What's so scary about presenting? For many people, it's the ‘What ifs?':

What if I go blank?

What if the technology fails on me?

What if they ask awkward questions?

The fact is you can't be in control of everything; you can only ever really be in control of your thoughts. Your thoughts become your feelings and your feelings show in your body language. Your job is to stay in control of your own mind and don't ever panic.

The key to presenting is pretty simple; be yourself and get your points across to your audience in the best way possible.

If you're presenting to people who know you, avoid slipping into some super ‘presenter’ mode, because it can backfire dramatically and you can lose credibility. It's slightly different when you are presenting to people you've never met before. In that situation you can try different ways of presenting the same material to find out what works best for you.

Once you've found out for yourself what an impact just a few simple changes have on people's perception of you, then you will have no need ever to find presentations stressful again.

Remember, presentations are about you first and foremost. Whatever you are trying to get across is secondary.

Body language can be an amazing ally. It can blow your audience away. Or it can ruin the best presentation you've ever written. In this chapter, you'll find out how.
